How to Create a Wedding Soundtrack That Actually Feels Like You Two

Let’s be honest: The moment the first song plays, you’re not just setting a tone—you’re telling your story.

Whether you’re walking down the aisle to something soft and swoony, or kicking off the dancefloor with a full-blown floor-filler, every song should feel like you two

So, how do you create a soundtrack that feels personal, thoughtful, and unforgettable (in the best way)? Here’s how to do it without the stress.

1. Start with the Milestones

Every couple has their “songs” even if you two haven't decided on it, yet. Maybe it’s the 90s banger that played during your first snog, the track that was on repeat during your first holiday, or the slow jam that played during a teary proposal. Start there. These songs are memory-packed—and hearing them again on the day will hit differently.

Pro Tip: Don’t stop at your memories. Ask your parents, siblings, or best mates if there’s a song they associate with you two. It’s a sweet way to surprise them during the reception party.

2. Think in Moments, Not Just a List

Instead of building a giant playlist, break the day down into moments:

  • Getting ready

  • Ceremony

  • Drinks & mingling

  • Dinner

  • First dance

  • Dancefloor takeover

  • Final song of the night

Each of these has its own energy. So rather than one long playlist, think: what do I want people to feel right now? Excited? Nostalgic? A little weepy? Ready to scream-sing?

DJ Insight:I once DJ’ed for a couple who were both professional singers—and so were most of their friends. One of their must-play songs? Defying Gravity from Wicked. The second it dropped, the entire room turned into a full-on Broadway chorus. Everyone belted it out, and honestly,

it was electric.

The point is: there are no wrong choices when it comes to your wedding music. If a song feels like you, then it’s the right one.

3. Mix the Unexpected With the Crowd-Pleasers

There’s nothing wrong with a classic—Queen, Whitney, and Beyoncé will always get people moving. But weaving in tracks that say something about your relationship is what makes it yours.

Maybe it’s a niche indie track from the gig where you met. Or a cheesy pop song you both secretly love (it’s a judgement free-zone kinda night) because that’s the magic.

Not sure how to balance it all?

That’s where a good DJ makes all the difference. They will read the room, keep the momentum, and make sure your sentimental picks slot in perfectly.

4. Be Honest About What You Don’t Want

Knowing what doesn’t belong on your soundtrack is just as important as knowing what does.

If there’s a song that gives you the ick, leave it out. (Even if your cousin insists it’s a “banger.”) If you’d rather not hear a conga line forming halfway through the night? Make sure to tell your DJ.

A great wedding playlist is about you two—not just ticking boxes or trying to please everyone.

5. Leave Space for the Unexpected

Some of the best moments happen in the moment. A guest requests the song your uni mates used to belt out after two drinks. Your nan busts out moves you didn’t know she had when her favourite track comes on.

Leave a little space for those spontaneous moments. They often become the most memorable.

At the end of the day, your wedding soundtrack should feel like a greatest hits album of you two. Big moments, little nods, and songs that bring back all the feelings. If your guests leave saying, “That was so them,” you’ve nailed it.
